Why do different AI platforms cite different sources for legal information?
Analysis of AI citation patterns reveals that each major AI platform sources information through fundamentally different mechanisms. This represents critical strategic intelligence for law firms investing in Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
ChatGPT heavily favors encyclopedic knowledge sources like Wikipedia and traditional news outlets. Google AI Overviews pulls extensively from Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Quora—reflecting integration of Google's ecosystem. Perplexity relies heavily on community-generated content, with Reddit accounting for a substantial portion of its top-cited sources.
A one-size-fits-all optimization strategy no longer works across platforms. Instead, successful law firms tailor their approach to each engine's sourcing preferences.
Where each engine actually gets its answers. Each share below is that domain's percentage of all citations the platform made across the study window. This is a cross-industry measurement, not a legal-only one, so read it as the shape of each engine's sourcing rather than a figure for legal queries specifically.
| AI platform | Most-cited domain | Share of that platform’s citations | Rest of its top five | What that means for a law firm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Wikipedia | 7.8% | Reddit 1.8% · Forbes 1.1% · G2 1.1% · TechRadar 0.9% | Its top source is encyclopedic and its next tier is business and tech press. The lever is notability-grade, independently sourced coverage — earned press and accurate third-party reference entries — not more pages on your own site. |
| Google AI Overviews | 2.2% | YouTube 1.9% · Quora 1.5% · LinkedIn 1.3% · Gartner 0.7% | Four of its top five are community or user-generated platforms Google already surfaces. The lever is being genuinely present where those conversations happen, and publishing video — not a press strategy. | |
| Perplexity | 6.6% | YouTube 2.0% · Gartner 1.0% · Yelp 0.8% · LinkedIn 0.8% | Its Reddit share is three times Google AI Overviews’, and Yelp appears in its top five where it appears in neither of the others. Community standing and review presence carry the most weight of the three engines here. |

The three lists overlap less than a single “optimize for AI” strategy assumes: Wikipedia tops ChatGPT and appears in neither other top five, while Reddit leads both Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. Work aimed at one engine does not automatically transfer to the others — which is the argument for treating GEO and AEO as separate, measured workstreams.
