GEO Marketing for Law Firms
Get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude & Perplexity.
Mastering AI-powered client acquisition — turn ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude & Perplexity into your firm's most powerful lead engine.
Generative Engine Optimization is the work of getting a law firm named inside the answer itself — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude — rather than in a list of ten blue links beneath it. If that distinction is new, start with the definition of GEO and then read how GEO differs from traditional SEO, which sets out what changes and — just as usefully — what does not.
For firms ready to act rather than read, the GEO playbook for law firms runs the sequence end to end, from the opening audit through to signed cases. Getting recommended by ChatGPT narrows that to a single engine step by step, and the seven-step AI citation checklist is the short version to run against a site you already have. Everything under this hub is written for law firms specifically — the wider library is grouped by pillar below.
answer
GEO helps law firms get recommended by AI platforms — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity — when clients ask for an attorney. Unlike SEO, which ranks your site in results, GEO makes your firm the direct answer AI provides — so prospects arrive already recommended, not comparison-shopping ten blue links.
Clients are asking AI, not Google
A client in Los Angeles faces a business dispute. Instead of Googling keywords, they open ChatGPT: "I need a business litigation attorney who handles partnership disputes. Who should I contact?" The response determines which firm gets that high-value lead — and it happens thousands of times a day.
Over 70% of people seeking legal services begin online, and that search increasingly happens through AI assistants. Since 2002, InterCore has watched every shift — Yellow Pages to Google Ads, desktop to mobile, SEO to GEO. Each one created winners and losers; the firms that adapted early captured the market.
The guides below are the how. If you would rather have the work run for you, that engagement is what we do as an AI search optimization company for law firms — the platforms we cover, how the engagement is sequenced, and the criteria to judge any provider on. British and Australian English spell it AI search optimisation; it is the same discipline.
"Law firms that fail to adapt to Generative Engine Optimization will become invisible to the next generation of legal consumers. It's not a matter of if, but when."— Scott Wiseman, CEO, InterCore Technologies
One foundation, four disciplines
SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO aren't competitors — they're layers of one strategy that make your firm visible wherever a client searches, from classic Google to conversational AI.
Rank in classic Google — site architecture, Core Web Vitals, internal linking and on-page optimization for local intent.
Be cited and recommended inside generative answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity — the answer, not a link.
Win the direct answer — Featured Snippets, People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews and voice — with clear, structured Q&A.
Make everything machine-readable — entities, structured data and semantic HTML — so every AI surface understands your firm.

Same foundation, evolved goal
| Aspect | Traditional SEO | GEO Marketing |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Rank in search results | Be the cited source in AI answers |
| Content focus | Keywords, backlinks, authority | Context, entities, coverage |
| Interaction | Users click to your site | Answer delivered in the response |
| Success metric | Rankings, traffic, CTR | Citations, recommendations |
| Technical needs | Meta tags, sitemaps, speed | Schema, knowledge graphs, semantic HTML |
Four battle-tested approaches
Think entities, not pages. Your firm connects to attorneys, practice areas, locations and case types — AI understands the world through these relationships.
Write like you talk. AI favors authentic, human answers — "here's what we advise clients in your situation," not "best injury lawyer LA."
AI favors in-depth, authoritative sources. Cover topics completely — think Wikipedia, not brochure — instead of dozens of thin keyword pages.
Diversify formats: structured FAQs, how-to guides, case studies, legal guides and detailed attorney profiles that establish authority.
Each engine has its quirks
Values comprehensive, educational content. Give complete answers, clear structure and actionable next steps.
Leans on Google's ecosystem. Optimize Business Profile, gather reviews, keep NAP consistent, use structured data.
Excels at nuanced, analytical content. Provide detailed legal analysis, citations and multiple perspectives.
Prioritizes recent, authoritative sources with clear citations. Keep content fresh and cite credible data.
Integrates with Bing & Microsoft. Claim Bing Places, add Microsoft schema, nail mobile + intent matching.
The signals that get your firm cited
To rank in Google AI Overviews and earn mentions in ChatGPT and Claude, AI platforms weigh the same core trust signals. We engineer every one of them.
Rank in Google's AI Overviews by feeding the Google ecosystem — a complete Business Profile, fresh reviews, NAP consistency and structured data Gemini already trusts.
Earn mentions by dominating the "best-of" lists and directories ChatGPT pulls from — Super Lawyers, Three Best Rated, Yelp — plus comprehensive, citable content on your own site.
Win Claude's nuanced answers with analytical depth — well-cited case results, clear reasoning, and accurate, authoritative content it can quote with confidence.
Review volume, star rating, recency and owner responses are among the strongest local-prominence signals AI uses to decide which firm to recommend.
Active, consistent profiles and shared content reinforce your firm as a real, recognized entity — strengthening the knowledge-graph links AI relies on.
Bar admissions, verifiable case results, credentials, testimonials and authoritative citations — the experience and trust markers every AI platform demands before it recommends a lawyer.
The E-E-A-T Plus framework
Google's Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness — plus three we add for GEO: Clarity, Comprehensiveness and Citability. This is the content backbone AI rewards.
Who, what, why, when, where & how
When AI fans one question into many sub-queries, the firm that has answered every intent gets cited. We build content for all six — so you're the answer no matter how a client asks.
"Who's the best injury lawyer near me?"
Attorney profiles, credentials, reviews and entity authority that make you the named answer.
"What is my car-accident case worth?"
Explainer guides, case-value ranges and statistics AI can quote with confidence.
"Why hire a lawyer after a minor crash?"
Decision-stage content that frames the stakes and positions your firm as the trusted choice.
"When should I file my injury claim?"
Statute-of-limitations and timing guides, jurisdiction-specific deadlines and urgency triggers.
"Where do I file a claim in my county?"
Location & court pages with local jurisdiction detail and geographic schema for every market.
"How does a settlement actually work?"
Step-by-step HowTo guides and process walkthroughs marked up so AI can cite each step.
Structured data is your secret weapon
Schema markup is a detailed map of your content for AI. Properly implemented, it makes your content dramatically easier for AI engines to parse, quote and attribute — the difference between being read and being cited. Deploy these types across your law-firm site:

The metrics that matter
Traditional analytics miss AI visibility. We track the signals that prove GEO is working.
| Metric | What it measures | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Mention Rate | How often AI names your firm | 15%+ of target queries |
| Citation Rate | Direct citation vs. mention | Rising quarter-over-quarter |
| Accuracy Rate | Correct, current firm info | 100% |
| Recommendation Freq. | Direct AI recommendations | Top 3 for practice areas |
| Conversion Rate | Quality of AI-driven leads | 2× traditional digital |

"They actually understand how the AI platforms work. Our cost per signed case dropped while lead quality went up."
"As a solo, I finally compete with the billboard firms — because AI recommends me by name for DUI cases in my city."

What is GEO marketing for a law firm?
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a law firm's expertise, entity data and citations so that AI search engines name the firm in their answers. Where SEO competes for a ranked link, GEO competes to be the source the model quotes when someone asks it to recommend a lawyer.
The distinction matters because the two systems retrieve differently. A search engine ranks documents and shows you a list. A generative engine assembles an answer from passages it has retrieved, then attributes some of them. A firm can hold the top organic position and still be absent from the answer, because the model never needed that page to compose its response.
That is why GEO work concentrates on three things a ranking algorithm largely ignores: whether your firm resolves to one unambiguous entity, whether individual passages answer a question without surrounding context, and whether independent sources corroborate what your own site claims. Our full definition of GEO covers the mechanics; GEO vs SEO compares them side by side.
| Discipline | Competes for | Primary surface | Unit of retrieval |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | A ranked position | Google organic results and the local pack | The page |
| GEO | Being named in a generated answer | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity | The passage |
| AEO | The direct answer | Featured snippets and voice answers | The answer block |
| AIO | Inclusion inside an AI Overview | Google AI Overviews | The passage |
How is GEO different from SEO for a law firm?
SEO earns a position in a list of links; GEO earns a mention inside an answer. The practical consequence is that ranking first no longer guarantees inclusion, because generative engines retrieve individual passages rather than whole pages and may assemble an answer without ever citing the page that ranks best.
Most of the SEO foundation still applies. A page that cannot be crawled, renders only after JavaScript, or loads slowly is invisible to both systems. What changes is everything above that foundation: structure, specificity and corroboration start to matter more than keyword targeting.
The most common failure we see is a page that reads well to a human and offers nothing to a model — long narrative paragraphs with no question-shaped headings, no self-contained answers, and no tables. It ranks acceptably and is never quoted.
What carries over from SEO
Crawlability, server-side rendering, site speed, a clean information architecture, internal linking, and accurate structured data. These are prerequisites for both systems — a firm with a broken technical foundation cannot win either.
What is specific to GEO
Answer-first passages, question-shaped headings, extractable tables, one unambiguous firm entity with consistent sameAs profiles, and independent third-party corroboration of the claims your site makes about you.
What stops working
Keyword density, thin location pages that swap a city name into a shared template, and pages built to rank rather than to answer. Generative engines have no reason to quote a page that says nothing specific.
How does each AI engine decide which law firms to cite?
Each engine retrieves differently, so a firm can be cited consistently by one and ignored by another. ChatGPT favours comprehensive structured coverage, Gemini leans on Google's own entity and local signals, Claude weights independent third-party corroboration, and Perplexity prioritises pages with clear, checkable attribution.
Treating them as one audience is the usual mistake. The engine-specific guides cover each in depth: Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and ChatGPT.
| Engine | What it leans on | What tends to earn the citation |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Comprehensive, well-structured coverage of a topic | Complete answers with clear structure and a defined next step |
| Gemini / AI Overviews | Google's entity graph, local signals and structured data | Consistent NAP, a maintained Business Profile, extractable tables |
| Claude | Independent third-party sources, cross-verified | Corroborating coverage you do not control, and content that states its limits |
| Perplexity | Source quality and clear attribution | Pages that make their sourcing explicit and easy to check |
| Copilot | Bing's index, schema and entity signals | Clean structured data and a resolvable firm entity |
What makes an AI engine cite one firm over another?
Three things, in order: whether the firm resolves to a single unambiguous entity, whether the page contains passages that answer a question on their own, and whether independent sources say the same thing. On-page structure is necessary but rarely sufficient — corroboration is what separates firms with similar sites.
Entity resolution
One firm identity, referenced rather than re-declared across the site, with a consistent name, address and telephone and a set of sameAs profiles that actually resolve. A firm that appears as three slightly different entities competes against itself.
Passage-level structure
Question-shaped headings, each followed immediately by a self-contained answer that survives being quoted without its surroundings. This is the single highest-leverage on-page change for most firms, and the one most sites skip.
Independent corroboration
Legal directories, bar association pages, earned editorial coverage and genuine reviews. Models weight sources they do not consider self-interested, which is why off-site presence outperforms on-site assertion.
Machine-readable trust
Real attorney credentials, named authorship, and structured data that matches what is visible on the page. Schema describing content that is not there is a mismatch, not an advantage. The AI citation checklist walks the full list.
Which schema types does a law firm need to be citable?
A small set, cross-linked by shared identifiers, matters more than a long list. One organisation node for the firm, one Person node per attorney, plus the page-type node and a breadcrumb. Schema does not make a page citable on its own — it makes an already-citable page legible.
The failure mode worth avoiding is marking up content that is not visible on the page, or declaring the firm entity repeatedly with slightly different values. Both split the entity rather than strengthening it. The schema cheat sheet covers the property-level detail.
| Node | What it establishes | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| LegalService / Organization | The firm as one resolvable entity | Declared once site-wide, referenced by ID elsewhere |
| Person | A named, credentialed attorney | One per attorney, linked to the firm |
| Article / WebPage | What this specific page is | Every content page |
| FAQPage | Question-and-answer pairs visible on the page | Only where the answers are server-rendered |
| BreadcrumbList | Where the page sits in the site | Every page, matching the visible breadcrumb |
