Why AI search visibility wins cases

AI-first

Clients Ask AI First

A growing share of people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to research services before they call. If your firm isn't structured for retrieval, you're invisible in that answer.

The Foundation

What is Schema Markup for Law Firms?

he way potential clients find legal representation has fundamentally transformed. Traditional Google searches are rapidly being supplemented—and in some cases replaced—by AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot. When someone asks these platforms “Who is the best personal injury attorney in Los Angeles?” your firm either appears in the answer or becomes invisible. The difference between being cited by AI search engines and being overlooked often comes down to one critical technical element: schema markup. This structured data acts as a translator between…

What is Schema Markup?

Schema markup is structured data code added to your law firm’s website that helps search engines and AI systems understand your content with precision. Think of it as providing context labels that clarify what each piece of information represents. Created in 2011 through a collaboration between Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Yandex, Schema.org established a standardized vocabulary that describes webpage content in a way machines can easily parse.

While humans reading your attorney bio understand you’re a lawyer with 15 years of experience, search engines need explicit markup to recognize those credentials reliably. How Schema Works: A Simple Example When you add LegalService schema to your practice area pages, you’re telling search engines: “This is a legal service business” “We specialize in personal injury law” “Our office is located at 13428 Maxella Ave, Marina Del Rey, CA” “We have 23 years of experience” “Our average client rating is 4.9 stars” This structured information becomes machine-readable data that AI systems can confidently cite and reference. Three Primary Schema Formats While schema can be implemented in three formats—JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa—JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) has emerged as the preferred standard.

Google explicitly recommends JSON-LD because it separates structured data from HTML content, making implementation cleaner and maintenance easier. More than 45 million web domains now implement Schema.org structured data, representing approximately 12.4% of all registered domains. As of 2025, Schema.org includes over 800 schema types covering everything from legal services to educational content, medical conditions, and local businesses.
