How much do Google Ads clicks cost for Chicago law firms?
It depends on the practice area. For people searching in Chicago, Google's top-of-page bid range runs from $47.26 to $220.00 a click for "chicago personal injury lawyer" and from $8.40 to $46.91 for "chicago divorce lawyer". The table lists ten Chicago legal searches from Google Ads data read on 3 October 2026.
Google defines the low figure as "the lower range bid—an approximation of the 20th percentile—that advertisers have historically paid for a keyword’s top of page bid, based on your location and Search Network settings." The high figure is the same measure at the 80th percentile. The location set here is Chicago, Illinois, on Google Search only.
Two things stand out. Injury searches cost several times what family, immigration or employment searches cost: the high-range bid for a car accident search is $378.52, against $11.50 for an employment lawyer search. And the range inside one practice area is wide. The car accident range starts at $22.55, so where a firm's own cost per click falls depends on the searches it chooses to bid on.
These are bid ranges. They are not a quote and not a forecast of what any firm will pay. Search volume is Google's average monthly count for the term and its close variants from people in Chicago, September 2025 to August 2026. Google returned no figures for "chicago medical malpractice lawyer" or "chicago bankruptcy lawyer", and no bid range for the workers' compensation search.
| Search term | Average monthly searches in Chicago | Top-of-page bid, low range | Top-of-page bid, high range |

| chicago car accident lawyer | 1,900 | $22.55 | $378.52 |

| chicago immigration lawyer | 1,600 | $5.10 | $26.08 |
| chicago employment lawyer | 1,300 | $4.67 | $11.50 |
| chicago truck accident lawyer | 1,000 | $131.65 | $250.00 |

What does Illinois Rule 7.2 require in a law firm's ad?
Illinois Rule of Professional Conduct 7.2(a) lets a lawyer advertise through "written, recorded, or electronic communication, including public media," and says any such communication "shall include the name and office address of at least one lawyer or law firm responsible for its content." Rule 7.2 was last amended on April 1, 2025, effective July 1, 2025.
Rule 7.1 applies to every ad as well: "A lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer’s services." A statement is misleading under the rule if it "omits a fact necessary to make the statement considered as a whole not materially misleading."
The comment to Rule 7.2 says a lawyer may pay for "Internet-based advertisements" and may compensate "employees, agents and vendors who are engaged to provide marketing or client development services."
A search ad is short. Where the name and office address appear, and whether a given ad satisfies the rule, is a decision for the lawyer responsible for the ad. InterCore is a marketing company and does not give legal advice; this section quotes the rules for general information only.
| Rule | What the text says | Last amended |
|---|---|---|
| 7.1 — Communications concerning a lawyer's services | No false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. | Rule text in force since January 1, 2010; comment amended October 15, 2015 |
| 7.2(a) — Advertising | Advertising is permitted. Each communication must include the name and office address of at least one responsible lawyer or law firm. | April 1, 2025, effective July 1, 2025 |
| 7.2(b) — Paying for recommendations | A lawyer may not give anything of value for a recommendation, but may pay the reasonable costs of advertisements the rule permits. | April 1, 2025, effective July 1, 2025 |
| 7.2(c) — Intermediary connecting services | Sets conditions for taking part in a lawyer directory, referral service, matching service, bidding site, question-and-answer site, lead generator or similar marketplace. | April 1, 2025, effective July 1, 2025 |

Can Illinois law firms use Google Local Services Ads?
Google's category list for Local Services Ads in the United States includes "Lawyers" and sixteen named lawyer services, among them personal injury, criminal, DUI, family, immigration, bankruptcy and estate. Google says advertisers "pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer." Availability in a given area is confirmed through Google's eligibility check.
Local Services Ads work differently from search ads. Google describes the unit as "shown prominently in Google Search results when people search for the services you offer in areas you've chosen," and a potential client calls or messages the firm from the ad. Google also warns: "If you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected."
Profiles that pass Google's checks carry the Google Verified badge, which Google describes as "signaling to consumers that your business has passed Google’s proprietary screening process."
One Illinois point to settle first. Rule 7.2(c) sets conditions for taking part in an "intermediary connecting service," a term the rule defines to include a "lead generator, or similar marketplace." Whether a pay-per-lead ad product falls under that definition is a legal question this page does not answer. A firm should put it to its ethics counsel before it enrolls.

Should a Chicago firm advertise to the city or to all of Cook County?
That depends on where the firm takes cases, and the population figures show how much the choice matters. The Census Bureau's July 1, 2024 estimates put Chicago at 2,721,308 residents and Cook County at 5,182,617. About 2.46 million county residents, 47 percent of the county, live outside the Chicago city limits.
The court map points the same way. The Circuit Court of Cook County lists six municipal districts: the First in Chicago and five suburban districts in Skokie, Rolling Meadows, Maywood, Bridgeview and Markham. The Office of the Chief Judge is in the Richard J. Daley Center at 50 W. Washington St., Chicago, IL 60602.
A firm that appears in the suburban districts is choosing between a campaign limited to the city and one that also reaches the county's other 2.46 million residents. The bid figures in the first table are for searchers located in Chicago itself, so a county-wide campaign should be priced from county-wide figures.
| Area | Population estimate, July 1, 2024 |
|---|---|
| Chicago city | 2,721,308 |
| Cook County | 5,182,617 |
| Cook County outside Chicago | 2,461,309 |
